Autumn is only just getting started, but the Women’s Super League has already been serving top-class entertainment from the very first weeks. The second round was like a condensed trailer for the whole season: star comebacks, wonder goals, heroic wins despite being down a player, and the cold, ruthless dominance of league giants. From Manchester to London, Leicester to Liverpool – the stands were bursting with emotions, and the players sent a clear message: the title race this year will be merciless.
Manchester City – Brighton 2:1
A sluggish start, a quick punishment: in the 14th minute Francesca Kirby put Brighton ahead with a spectacular strike. The Citizens took a long time to find their rhythm until Khadija “Bunny” Shaw finally woke up. The Jamaican striker equalized in the 58th minute, and shortly after Yui Hasegawa blasted in from distance to secure the hosts’ first win of the season. Maybe not dazzling, but priceless.
West Ham – Arsenal 1:5
It started shockingly, with Daphne van Domselaar putting the ball into her own net in the 5th minute. Instead of panicking, Arsenal showed nerves of steel. Frida Maanum quickly equalized, and after the break the London machine went full throttle. Blackstenius, Foord, and a Russo brace, including a confident penalty, turned the derby night into a one-sided show. Arsenal made it clear: fighting for the title is their duty, not a dream.
Aston Villa – Chelsea 1:3
The story was obvious: the big return of Sam Kerr. The Australian, absent for more than 20 months, marked her comeback with a goal. Earlier, Chelsea had taken the lead through Beever-Jones, but Ebony Salmon’s equalizer stirred some nerves. The hosts were rescued by luck, with an own goal from Villa, before Kerr sealed the win late on. The Blues are regaining their shine, and Kerr reminded everyone why she’s a league icon.
London City Lionesses – Manchester United 1:5
The newcomers were painfully brought down to earth. United set the tempo from the opening minutes. Le Tissier opened the scoring from the spot, before the attacking steamroller rolled on. Malard scored twice, with Riviere and Park also on the scoresheet. Parris salvaged a consolation, but it was just a drop in the ocean of Red Devils’ dominance.
Leicester – Liverpool 1:0
A football drama in two acts. In the 56th minute, Shannon O’Brien saw red, and it seemed Leicester would be pushed onto the back foot. Not at all, three minutes later Emily van Egmond thundered in a header for 1–0. From that moment the Foxes played as if in a trance, defending heroically until the final whistle. A character win they’ll remember for a long time.
Everton – Tottenham 0:2
Goal of the week? Ria Tønberg, without a doubt. A strike from almost halfway, the Everton keeper completely stunned, and an absolute masterpiece. Spurs added another goal and took three comfortable points back from Liverpool. Everton tried, but against such an organized side, they simply had no answers.
Matchday Summary
The second round delivered some strong statements: Manchester United and Arsenal keep rolling, Chelsea regained their sparkle thanks to Kerr, and Leicester proved that heart and grit can move mountains. Tottenham are knocking harder on the door of the top tier, while Manchester City, though struggling, finally found their footing.
After just two rounds, the table is already stretching out: four teams with maximum points, the newcomer brutally welcomed to the league, and the rest still chasing form. If this weekend is a preview of the whole season, fans are in for a rollercoaster of emotions and new heroines ready to write WSL history.
