World Sevens Football 2026 in London

Published 4 min read

At the end of May, London will become the center of one of the most innovative events in women’s football. From May 28–30, 2026, the Gtech Community Stadium will host a special edition of the World Sevens Football tournament. For the first time in history, it will be entirely dedicated to clubs from the English Barclays Women’s Super League.

This is an event that is already generating significant interest and has the potential to become one of the key dates in the European women’s football calendar.

New format, new emotions

World Sevens is a completely different version of football compared to traditional 11 a side competitions. The tournament is played in a 7v7 format, on a smaller pitch and in a shorter time frame. Matches last around 30 minutes. The result? Intensity, pace, and spectacle that are hard to compare with traditional games.

Less tactical “waiting,” more one on one duels, dynamic actions, and goals. It is a format perfectly suited to the modern audience, as it is fast, engaging, and attractive to new fans.

English edition with a strong lineup

The London edition of the tournament will feature exactly eight teams from the Women’s Super League. Four of them have already been officially confirmed:

Manchester United Women – finalists of the 2025 edition in Estoril
Aston Villa Women – debutants in the tournament
Tottenham Hotspur Women
West Ham United Women

The remaining four teams will be announced in the coming weeks. Everything suggests that top teams from the league will be present in London, further increasing the prestige of the event.

Tournament at the perfect time

The organizers have deliberately chosen the end of May. World Sevens will conclude one day before the Women’s FA Cup final at Wembley (May 31), creating a true “blockbuster weekend” of women’s football in London.

For fans, this means several days filled with top level football, and for clubs, an additional opportunity for promotion and building relationships with supporters.

Prize money and motivation

Although the prize pool in the London edition is lower than in the global edition of 2025 (where it reached around $5 million), it remains very attractive. It is estimated that in 2026 it will amount to approximately $1.5 million.

This is a level comparable to prize money in prestigious domestic competitions, which means the tournament is not just an exhibition event, but a genuine sporting competition.

Evolution of the project

World Sevens Football is a relatively new project that is developing rapidly. The first edition in May 2025 in Estoril, Portugal, was won by Bayern Munich, who defeated Manchester United 2–1 in the final. In December 2025, in Fort Lauderdale, San Diego Wave FC claimed the title.

The London edition represents another step forward instead of an international mix of clubs, the organizers have focused on a single league and its identity. It is an attempt to create a more local, yet equally spectacular product.

More than a tournament

World Sevens is not only about sport, but also a festival-like event. Matches are played back to back, and the atmosphere resembles entertainment events more than a traditional matchday.

An additional advantage is the location. Brentford’s stadium is one of the best connected venues in London, making it easily accessible for both local fans and visiting supporters.

A new direction for women’s football

World Sevens Football fits into a broader trend of exploring new formats and ways of presenting women’s football. It combines a high sporting level with a dynamic format and a modern approach to the fan experience.

If the London edition proves successful, it could mark the beginning of a permanent place for this type of competition in the calendar, as a complement to traditional leagues and tournaments.
