A Matchday Full of Contrasts: Chelsea’s Knockout, Arsenal’s Drama, and the Power of Manchester

Published 4 min read

The excitement in the Women’s Super League shows no signs of slowing down. Matchday four brought goals in the opening minutes, last-gasp heartbreaks, lightning-fast knockouts, and a cold shower for several favorites. From Aston Villa’s heroic fight in London, through Chelsea and City’s attacking showcases, to United’s ruthless efficiency the league is gaining momentum, and the battle for the top spots looks thrilling.

Arsenal vs Aston Villa → 1-1
“Lucy Parker robs Arsenal of victory in stoppage time”
Arsenal started with energy and were already ahead in the 10th minute thanks to a precise strike from Frida Maanum. The hosts looked in control, dominating statistically, keeping possession, and creating more danger.
Aston Villa, however, waited patiently, and their chance came in stoppage time. After a corner, the ball fell to Lucy Parker, who ruthlessly smashed it home. Arsenal dropped two points in dramatic fashion, while Villa showed character by fighting until the very last action.

Leicester City vs Tottenham Hotspur → 1-2
“Three goals in the first half, Tottenham on top”
Spurs struck first in the 15th minute as Cathinka Friis Tandberg opened the scoring with a well-worked move. Just six minutes later, in the 21st minute, Olivia Holdt doubled the lead.
Leicester responded before halftime  in the 40th minute Samantha Tierney pulled one back from a set piece, giving the hosts hope. The second half was a battle, but goalless, Tottenham showed maturity and held on for the win.

Liverpool vs Manchester United → 0-2
“A quick blow and a knockout before halftime”
United came out flying, with Hinata Miyazawa striking in the 4th minute to stun Liverpool’s defense. Just before the break (45+2’), Ella Toone made it 2-0.
Liverpool tried to fight back in the second half but lacked precision and finishing. United controlled the tempo, and their defense never allowed the Reds to get into rhythm. Marc Skinner’s side looked solid and full of title ambitions.

Manchester City vs London City Lionesses → 4-1
“Shaw flawless from the spot, City dominate”
City started brightly as Vivianne Miedema and Laura Blindkilde Brown both scored early, putting the hosts 2-0 up.
In the 19th minute, the Lionesses pulled one back to cause brief tension, but then Khadija Shaw took charge converting two penalties to seal a 4-1 victory.
It was a display of City’s attacking power and a harsh reality check for the newly promoted London City side.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Everton → 1-0
“Narrow but effective”
A midfield battle decided by a single action. In the first half, Michelle Agyemang scored the decisive goal for Brighton.
Everton tried to respond but lacked quality in the final third. For Brighton, this win was proof that even in tight matches, they can make the most of limited chances.

West Ham United vs Chelsea → 0-4
“Chelsea kill the game in 15 minutes”
Chelsea came out charging and demolished the hosts in no time.

  • 8th minute — a beautiful free-kick by Aggie Beever-Jones, 0-1.
  • 12th minute — a lightning move finished by Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, 0-2.
  • 15th minute — a powerful strike from Erin Cuthbert, 0-3.

Three goals in seven minutes crushed West Ham’s hopes completely. In the second half, after Inès Belloumou was sent off, Chelsea added a fourth through Wieke Kaptein. It was a brutal show of force, Chelsea in full champion mode, showing no mercy.
