Preview of Matchday 2 in the WSL

Published 3 min read

The start of the Women’s Super League showed that we are in for a season full of twists and turns. Already in the opening round we had it all: goals, surprises, and standout individual performances. Chelsea confirmed their title ambitions, Everton stunned in the Merseyside derby, while newcomers London City Lionesses collected their first top-flight experience. Now it’s time for the second round of fixtures, games that could set early trends and reveal the new season’s heroines.

Aston Villa vs Chelsea

Chelsea started strong, beating Manchester City was a clear statement: the champions won’t give up their crown without a fight. Aston Villa drew 0–0 with Brighton, showing solid defense but little spark in attack.
All eyes will be on Rachel Daly, if anyone can find a way past Chelsea, it’s her.

London City Lionesses vs Manchester United

The Lionesses have already made their WSL debut, but now comes the real test: facing an in-form Manchester United. The “Red Devils” thrashed Leicester in their opener and look ready to compete at the very top.
Key player: Ella Toone—creative, unpredictable, and always dangerous.

Leicester City vs Liverpool

Both teams need to recover quickly after a poor start. Leicester were taught a footballing lesson by United (0–4), while Liverpool suffered a painful derby defeat to Everton (1–4). For both sides this is a chance to bounce back, a first win could give them breathing space.
The Reds’ leader remains Missy Bo Kearns, captain and heartbeat of the team.

Arsenal vs Manchester City

The match of the round! Arsenal enter the season with big ambitions, and Beth Mead is already serving assists like before her injury. Manchester City, after losing to Chelsea, need a response, but squad issues may cause trouble.
City’s hope? Khadija “Bunny” Shaw, who can turn even the smallest defensive mistake into a goal.

West Ham United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

Both sides are looking for stability. West Ham lost to Tottenham, while Brighton earned a point against Aston Villa. This game is an opportunity to get back on track.
Brighton’s main threat is Elisabeth Terland—clinical and ruthless inside the box.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

Everton were the surprise package of the opening round: a spectacular 4–1 win over Liverpool, with debutant Ornella Vignola netting a hat-trick, gave the team a huge confidence boost. Tottenham also started well, beating West Ham. Both sides are in good form, which means one thing: an attacking spectacle.
Once again, all eyes will be on Vignola, who proved on her debut that she has the potential to become one of the league’s new stars.

Summary

Matchday 2 in the WSL promises plenty of excitement: from the Arsenal–City clash, to the Lionesses’ test against United, to the showdown between high-flying Everton and Spurs. The heroines of the opening round: Daly, Toone, Kearns, Shaw, Terland, and Vignola, could once again decide their teams’ fortunes. At stake now are not just points, but the first storylines of the season. Who will confirm their strength, and who will find themselves under pressure already at the start?
