April 27, 2025, will forever be remembered by Union’s players and fans. In front of more than 14,000 supporters at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, the team coached by Ailien Poese crushed Borussia Mönchengladbach 6–1, securing promotion with three rounds still to play. The Köpenick side will play in Germany’s top division for the first time in history — and achieved it in their very first attempt.
From the Third Division to the Bundesliga in Two Years
The story of Union Berlin Women is one of rapid growth. Just two seasons ago, the team was playing in the third tier — Regionalliga Nordost — in front of barely a hundred fans in the stands. Now, after back-to-back promotions, they will face Germany’s best clubs in the upcoming season.
The pace of development mirrors the journey of Union’s men’s team, which reached the Bundesliga in 2019 after years of persistence and growth.
A Club with Deep Roots
Union Berlin is a unique club, rich in tradition. The first women’s team was established in 1969 by a group of students, with coaches Bernd Müller and Bernd Vogel from the men’s section overseeing training.
After years of structural challenges — including the dissolution of the team during the GDR era and its rebuilding after German reunification — the women’s section became an integral part of the club.
Today, Union Berlin is owned by more than 69,000 members and is renowned for its exceptional fan culture.
The Push for Professionalization
The professionalization of the women’s squad in the 2023/2024 season, supported by club president Dirk Zingler, marked a turning point. The club invested millions in a modern training center, enabling the players to dedicate themselves fully to football.
