Bayern’s Dominance in the German Cup Final

Published 2 min read

For the second consecutive season, Bayern Munich’s women’s team completed the domestic double. After winning the German championship, they also lifted the German Cup by convincingly defeating VfL Wolfsburg 4–0 in the final. The match played in Cologne lacked intensity for long periods, but after the break the champions completely took control and left their opponents with no chance.

The first half was very tight. Bayern enjoyed more possession but struggled to break down Wolfsburg’s well organized defense. The team from Lower Saxony focused mainly on stopping Bayern’s attacks and looking for opportunities after regaining the ball.

For a long time, the fans mostly watched a battle in midfield. Wolfsburg’s best chance came from Lattwein, who tried her luck with a long range effort. At the other end, Harder came close, but her shot narrowly missed the target.

The breakthrough finally arrived in first-half stoppage time. After a VAR review, referee Franziska Wildfeuer awarded a penalty for a foul on Tanikawa. Georgia Stanway stepped up and calmly converted to give Bayern the lead. Moments later, Wolfsburg were saved by Linder, who cleared the ball off the line.

After the restart, Bayern reached a completely different level. Wolfsburg were pushed deep into their own half and could barely keep possession. Bayern patiently built their attacks and increased the pressure with every minute.

The second goal came from Pernille Harder, who found space in the penalty area after Eriksson’s cross and powered a header into the net to make it 2–0. Shortly after, Endemann had a chance to pull one back, but wasted the opportunity.

That was the moment Bayern fully took over the final. In the 77th minute, Tanikawa reacted quickest inside the box to score Bayern’s third goal, before Caruso sealed the 4–0 victory with a superb free kick a few minutes later.

The final score perfectly reflected the second half. Bayern looked more mature, more decisive and far more effective. For the Munich side, it is another major success and further proof of their dominance in German women’s football.

Wolfsburg will have a chance for revenge in August when the two teams meet again in the German Super Cup final.
