Frauen-Bundesliga 2025/26 – A New Chapter in League History

On September 5, the new Google Pixel Frauen-Bundesliga season kicks off and will run until May 17, 2026. This will be a landmark season, as for the first time in history 14 teams will take part, meaning more matches, a faster pace of competition, and even greater excitement for fans. The changes reflect the rapid development of women’s football in Germany and the growing interest from supporters, both in stadiums and in front of screens.

The new season will open with a spectacle in Munich. FC Bayern, reigning German champions and German Cup winners, will host Bayer Leverkusen at the legendary Allianz Arena. The match, scheduled for September 6 at 17:45, is already expected to break attendance records – with over 44,000 tickets sold, showing the immense popularity of women’s football in Bavaria’s capital.

Innovation will also reach the way matches are broadcast. The league’s title partner, Google, is introducing a groundbreaking technology this season: Pixel Cams. Special cameras placed among the fans, behind the goals, and near the dugouts will offer viewers a completely new perspective. These innovative angles aim to bring fans closer to the on-pitch emotions and make them feel as if they’re at the heart of the action. The first test of the technology will take place during the opening match, with ten selected games across the season featuring the system.

Another major talking point is the debut of 1. FC Union Berlin, who earned promotion after two highly successful seasons. The Köpenick side will face 1. FC Nürnberg in their first top-flight outing. Within the club, there is no hiding of ambition – the plan for the coming years is to establish themselves in the Bundesliga, and in the longer term, to fight for European competition. The fans’ enthusiasm is huge – over 5,000 tickets have already been sold for the first match, with attendance potentially reaching 8,000 spectators.

The new season was preceded by the German Super Cup, played in Karlsruhe. Bayern Munich showcased their strength, beating VfL Wolfsburg 4–2 to claim the first trophy of the 2025/26 campaign. The result underlines that the reigning champions remain favorites for another league title, though Wolfsburg have made it clear they intend to fight hard to reclaim the crown.

Fans will have to wait a few more days for the release of the full season schedule. The DFB plans to publish it once the fixtures for the men’s Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga are finalized, to ensure full synchronization of the calendars. What is already known, however, is that the season will feature some big clashes – including the classic Wolfsburg vs. Bayern showdown and the first-ever Nordderby between Werder Bremen and Hamburger SV.

The 2025/26 season promises to be exceptional. With more teams, stronger squads, and the introduction of modern broadcasting technologies, the Frauen-Bundesliga is not only raising its sporting level but also establishing itself as one of the most dynamically developing projects in European football. Bayern and Wolfsburg remain the main favorites, but the ambitious plans of Eintracht Frankfurt and Union Berlin could make the upcoming season one of the most competitive in the league’s history.
