Steel mentality of a goalkeeper

Steel mentality of a goalkeeper

Published 3 min read

Stina Johannes is one of the greatest hopes of German women’s football. The VfL Wolfsburg goalkeeper proves that the road to the top does not only lead through team training and league matches. Her recipe for success is a combination of hard physical work, mental discipline and the courage to set the highest goals.

A turning point in her career was the dramatic injury in 2018 – a broken tibia and fibula. Many doctors suggested that her professional football career might be over. But she did not give up. With the help of a psychologist, she began building new mental resilience, learning to imagine her leg as an indestructible steel pillar. This mental exercise marked the beginning of her “steel” mentality, which accompanies her to this day.

Johannes does not limit herself to standard methods. In her apartment she created a private gym in order to be completely independent and always ready to work on her form. Regular strength training not only helped her overcome back pain, but also made her more athletic, braver and more self-confident on the pitch. She herself admits that a strong body has an effect not only on her, but also on her opponents.

The goalkeeper’s professionalism is also evident in the fact that she surrounds herself with experts – from strength coaches to mental preparation specialists. She does not hide that in the future she would also like to work with a nutritionist in order to refine every detail of her preparation. For her, sporting and personal development is a process that has no end.

The move from Eintracht Frankfurt to VfL Wolfsburg was another conscious step towards the highest ambitions. At Wolfsburg she sees greater opportunities to win titles, but above all to improve her skills and get closer to the ultimate goal – becoming number one in the world. Johannes openly says that her biggest dream is to be the first goalkeeper of the German national team at the 2027 World Cup.

At the same time, she notices the changing environment of women’s football. She herself grew up at a time when women on the pitch had no visible role models. Today she is glad that young fans come to stadiums in the shirts of female players and that players can inspire entire generations of girls, showing them that in sport absolutely everything is possible.

The story of Stina Johannes is a tale of strength of character, consistency and breaking barriers. Her “steel mentality” has become the foundation of a career she is building step by step – with unwavering belief that the highest goals are within her reach.
