St. Pölten closes the gap to Austria Vienna

The season in the Austrian ADMIRAL Frauen Bundesliga is entering its decisive phase. Only three rounds remain until the end of the campaign, and the battle for the championship title between Austria Vienna and SKN St. Pölten is becoming more and more exciting.

The St. Pölten players comfortably defeated FC Red Bull Salzburg 3-0. The Vienna side also collected all three points by beating Sturm Graz 3-1, however previous draws meant that the lead was reduced to four points. Austria no longer looks as dominant as it did just a few weeks ago, and the pressure before the end of the season is growing with every match.

The match between St. Pölten and Salzburg was controlled by the home side from the very beginning. The defending champions dictated the tempo, were more effective in front of goal and left their opponents with little hope. For Salzburg, meanwhile, it was a very worrying sign ahead of the upcoming domestic cup final.

Austria Vienna, on the other hand, had to work hard for their victory against Sturm Graz. Despite the final 3-1 scoreline, the match remained balanced for a long time, and Sturm once again showed that they are capable of causing problems for the league’s top teams.

In the qualification group, First Vienna FC continues its impressive run. The leaders of this part of the table crushed SPG Südburgenland/TSV Hartberg 3-0 and after three rounds have a perfect nine point record. Vienna is impressing with consistency and is currently one of the most effective teams in the entire league.

Meanwhile, the clash between LASK and Rheindorf Altach ended in a goalless draw. Both teams had their chances, but lacked efficiency in front of goal.

One of the Round 21 matches was cancelled. The meeting between USV Neulengbach and FC Blau-Weiß Linz/Kleinmünchen was called off due to very serious financial problems at the Neulengbach club. One of the most successful teams in the history of Austrian women’s football, which won the national championship 11 times, has been struggling with a deep organisational and financial crisis for many months. In April 2026, the club filed for insolvency and additionally did not receive a licence to compete in the Bundesliga next season. The situation had been worsening week by week Neulengbach had already failed to appear for several league matches earlier, including against LASK, which resulted in automatic forfeits and cancellations. Due to the inability to field a team, the Austrian Football Association and league authorities decided to cancel another match scheduled for May 10, 2026. It is a sad ending to the story of a club that for years dominated women’s football in Austria and belonged to the most important teams in the country.
