The Supercopa de España Femenina is one of the most important trophies in the calendar of women’s football in Spain. Although its origins date back to 1997, the competition gained real prestige after its reactivation in the 2019/2020 season, when a four-team final tournament format was introduced. Since then, the Super Cup has become a short, intense event that attracts the attention of the entire women’s football community every year.
Originally, the Super Cup was played as a two-legged tie between the league champion and the winner of the Queen’s Cup. In this format, four editions were held between 1997 and 2000, after which the competition disappeared from the calendar for many years. A new chapter began in 2019 with the decision to introduce the “Final Four” format. From the 2019/2020 season onwards, six finals have been played, and the new formula quickly produced one clear leader.
The dominant force in the modern Supercopa is FC Barcelona Femení, which has won five of the six editions held under the new format. The only team capable of breaking this streak was Atlético de Madrid Femenino, which only underlines the scale of Barcelona’s advantage in recent years. This record means that the Catalan club approaches every new edition as the main favourite.
This year’s Super Cup, however, is shaping up to be another major challenge. The tournament will take place in the second half of January and will once again be played in a semi-final and final format, at a single venue and over a short period of time. Barcelona will be defending their title, while their rivals will try to use their growing experience and ambition to change the current balance of power. Among the contenders are also Real Madrid Femenino and Athletic Club Femenino, both hoping to break the favourites’ hegemony.
Fixtures and dates of the 2026 Supercopa de España Femenina
The semi-finals will be played on the following dates:
- 20 January 2026: Real Madrid Femenino – Atlético de Madrid Femenino

Today, the Supercopa de España Femenina is not only a battle for a trophy, but also an important symbol of the development of women’s football in Spain. Each new edition strengthens the position of the competition, and the outcome of the tournament often sets the tone for the rest of the season. This year’s edition will once again answer the key question: will Barcelona’s dominance be maintained, or will Spanish women’s football witness the beginning of a new chapter?
