Mexico in dominant form in the 2027 World Cup qualifiers

Published 3 min read

The Mexico women’s national team, led by head coach Pedro López, is on the verge of returning to the biggest stage in world football. After impressive victories at the start of the qualifiers, El Tri Femenil maintains a perfect record and dominates Group A.

Mexico leads the group with maximum points. Previous matches were true routs: 14–0 against Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (November 2025) and 7–0 against Saint Lucia (March 2026). Yesterday in Zacatecas, the team crushed the U.S. Virgin Islands 9–0. This is yet another sign of the team’s massive attacking power despite the absence of key forwards.

Next challenge: clash with Puerto Rico

This Saturday, April 18 (8:00 PM local time), Mexico will host Puerto Rico at Estadio Nemesio Diez in Toluca. A victory would practically secure qualification for the final tournament, which will determine participants for the World Cup in Brazil. Coach López emphasizes that the goal is not only to win, but also to keep a clean sheet and continue building confidence.

Squad and personnel issues

For the April FIFA window, the coach called up 23 players. The squad includes goalkeepers Blanca Félix and Jasmine Casarez (both from Chivas Guadalajara). Unfortunately, due to injuries, two key attacking players are missing: Jacqueline Ovalle and Diana Ordóñez. Despite these absences, the team remains optimistic thanks to squad depth and the form of players from Liga MX Femenil and foreign clubs (including Charlyn Corral, Scarlett Camberos, Stephany Mayor).

The squad combines experience with young talent. Coach López focuses on fast, attacking football and high intensity. An additional boost came from the March 1–0 victory over Brazil in front of home fans a result that showed Mexico can compete with the very best.

Chances of success

Mexico has not played in the Women’s World Cup since 2015. The current qualification campaign is a chance to break through and return to the elite. Success in the CONCACAF qualifiers would also open the path to the 2028 Olympics. In the background, the U-17 women’s team is also rising, having recently qualified for the 2026 U-17 World Cup in Morocco after dominating their group.

Liga MX Femenil provides the national team with solid players. Currently, Monterrey, América, and Pachuca sit at the top of the table—clubs that regularly supply the national team. The development of women’s football in Mexico is gaining momentum, although challenges remain: injuries, safety at some stadiums, and the need for greater professionalization.

If Mexico defeats Puerto Rico, it will be very close to direct qualification. Even in case of complications, a path through the playoffs seems realistic. Coach López is building a team that dreams of playing at the World Cup, and for many players it is a chance for a historic appearance.

Fans in the stadiums create a vibrant atmosphere, and the whole country is following the progress of “Tricolor Femenil” with hope. The coming weeks could prove to be a turning point for women’s football in Mexico.
