Wellington Phoenix confirmed their rising form and returned from an away trip with maximum points for the first time this season, defeating Western Sydney Wanderers 3–0 in Round 10 of the Ninja A League Women. The standout performers were Sabitra “Samba” Bhandari, the driving force behind the attack, and Emma Main, who found the net twice.
Although Wanderers were the designated home side, the atmosphere in the stands carried a strong yellow and black flavour. A large Nepalese community from across Sydney turned out to watch their national icon, and every touch from Bhandari was met with a roar of approval. The Phoenix responded quickly on the pitch.
In the seventh minute, the visitors won possession high up the field and moved the ball rapidly into the penalty area. Bhandari’s effort appeared to be drifting wide, but Emma Main reacted instinctively to redirect the ball into the net and open the scoring.
Wanderers attempted to respond, but their attacking play lacked precision. Phoenix goalkeeper Victoria Esson was rarely troubled, while at the other end Sham Khamis was forced into several important saves, including a low free kick from Grace Jale shortly before the interval.
The second half began with a decisive statement from Wellington. In the forty eighth minute, Bhandari reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the box and finished confidently to double the lead. Four minutes later the contest was effectively settled. Samba surged through midfield, drew the defenders, and released a perfectly weighted pass for Main, who converted from close range to complete her brace.
The statistics reflected the flow of the match. Wanderers enjoyed more possession and launched more attacks, but failed to turn control into clear chances, registering their first shot on target only late in the game. Phoenix were clinical, scoring three goals from five shots on target.
For the Sydney side it was another difficult night and further evidence of their attacking struggles, leaving them rooted to the bottom of the table after eight matches. Wellington, by contrast, had every reason to celebrate. Consecutive victories lifted the Phoenix into fourth place and underlined the growing threat posed by the Bhandari and Main partnership across the Ninja A League.
