Matchweek 5 delivered exactly what NWSL fans were waiting for after the break, big moments, standout performances, and major statements from the league’s top teams. San Diego Wave remains at the top of the table after making club history with a fifth straight win. The Wave came back from a two-goal deficit to defeat Denver Summit 3-2, proving once again why they are the team to beat right now.

Washington Spirit also stole the spotlight with a dominant 4-0 victory over Kansas City Current. Trinity Rodman scored her first goal of the season, Leicy Santos delivered a brace, and Claudia Martínez made history as the first Paraguayan player to score in NWSL. It was one of the most complete performances of the weekend.

Portland Thorns had a major storyline of their own as Sophia Wilson scored her first goal since returning from maternity leave, helping Portland secure a 2-1 win over Angel City. Her return to the scoresheet was one of the biggest feel-good moments of the week.

Racing Louisville and Orlando Pride produced one of the most thrilling matches of Matchweek 5, with Louisville earning a dramatic 3-2 victory. Despite the loss, Barbra Banda’s brace pushed her to the top of the Golden Boot race, continuing her incredible scoring form.

There was also a historic individual performance from Bay FC goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz, who recorded 12 saves against Gotham FC, tying the NWSL single-game record despite Bay’s defeat.

Meanwhile, Utah Royals continued their rise with a commanding 3-0 road win over Seattle Reign, securing their third consecutive victory, the best winning streak in club history and a clear sign that Utah is becoming one of the league’s biggest early-season surprises.

After five weeks, the NWSL season is only getting better. Stars are returning, history is being made, and the battle at the top is heating up fast.
