New York’s First Soccer Specific Stadium

This will be one of the most significant moments in the history of women’s soccer in the United States. Two time NWSL champions Gotham FC will play their home matches at Etihad Park from the 2028 season – the first soccer specific stadium in New York City’s history.

The modern venue is being built in Queens, right next to Citi Field. It will serve as the home of MLS club NYCFC, while starting in 2028 it will also become the home of Gotham FC. For the club, this marks the end of its long stay at a stadium in New Jersey and a move into the city it has represented for years.

The new location is important not only from a branding perspective. According to city officials, as many as three million people will be able to reach the stadium by public transportation within 75 minutes. The club hopes this will lead to a significant increase in attendance and even greater interest in women’s soccer.

“It is high time that Gotham FC has a world class soccer specific stadium where they can play world class soccer right here in the city they represent,” New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said during the official announcement.

The relocation announcement came just days after the club confirmed the signing of Australian star Sam Kerr. One of the world’s best strikers and the runner up in the 2023 Ballon d’Or voting is expected to become the face of a new era for Gotham FC and help the team remain among the NWSL’s elite.

The investment is part of New York City’s broader plan to expand its sports infrastructure. The city is preparing to host some of the world’s biggest sporting events, while the US Open tennis complex is undergoing a major renovation. There is also growing discussion about a joint bid by New York City and Lake Placid to host the 2042 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The move by Gotham FC could prove to be much more than just a change of address. It is a clear sign that women’s soccer in the United States is entering a new era, with modern stadiums, growing crowds and increasing interest from some of the biggest stars in world football.
