New national team, big name on the bench. What is San Marino planning?

San Marino, one of the smallest countries in Europe, is consistently developing its sports structures and is increasingly making its presence felt on the football map of the continent. The country, with a population of fewer than 34,000 people, is taking another important step by establishing a women’s national football team.

The decision was announced by the local federation, which has been working intensively for several years on the development of women’s football. Until now, activities in this area were mainly based on youth competitions and cooperation with clubs operating within a league system linked to Italian football. However, the most important element was missing, namely a senior national team that could compete at the international level and become a symbol of the ambitions of the entire community.

The creation of a national team is a response to the growing interest in football among women and girls in San Marino. The federation notes a steady increase in the number of players, as well as greater involvement of clubs in creating women’s sections. The new project is intended to organize this development and give it a more professional character.

The team will be led by Giulia Domenichetti, a former Italy international who earned 87 caps for her national team during her career. Domenichetti brings extensive experience gained at both club and international level. She won the Italian championship, triumphed in the domestic cup and Super Cup, and after ending her playing career, she began working as a coach.

Her appointment is not accidental. The federation has chosen someone who understands the realities of professional football and is capable of building a team from the ground up. Domenichetti’s role will not be limited to leading the team in international matches. A key element will also be the creation of a training system, talent identification, and the integration of the football community in the country.

In the coming months, the first training camps and friendly matches are planned, which will allow an assessment of the team’s potential. San Marino will have to follow the standard pathway within UEFA structures in order to join official qualification competitions in the future. It is a process that requires time, but the federation emphasizes that the project is long term in nature.

The establishment of the national team is also a boost in terms of image. For such a small country, every step on the international stage carries not only sporting but also symbolic significance. The women’s team can become one of the tools for promoting the country and an inspiration for the younger generation.

Although San Marino remains one of the smallest participants on the European football stage, its actions show that the development of women’s football is not reserved exclusively for the largest federations. The new national team is only the beginning of the journey, but it is already clear that the ambitions reach far beyond a symbolic debut.
