Orlando Pride has announced the signing of Lizbeth Ovalle from Mexican club Tigres Femenil. The transfer of the 25-year-old winger has set a new record in women’s football history — the National Women’s Soccer League club paid a staggering $1.5 million for the player. Ovalle signed a two-year contract with an option to extend it until 2028.
The previous transfer record belonged to Arsenal, which in July spent $1.3 million to acquire Olivia Smith from Liverpool.
Before Ovalle officially joins the Orlando squad, she will take part in the Liga MX Femenil All-Star match, where the Mexican league will face FC Barcelona, the three-time Champions League winner.
“I’m happy to become a part of Orlando Pride. I’m coming here with a clear goal — I want to win trophies and make history with this club. I’m ready to give my all and help the team continue to grow,” said the player in an official statement.
Ovalle is a true legend of Tigres Femenil. She played 294 matches, scoring 136 goals and providing 103 assists, helping the club win six Mexican league titles. With the Mexican national team, she has made 81 appearances, scored 20 goals, and won a gold medal at the 2023 Pan American Games.
Currently, Orlando Pride, the reigning NWSL champions, sit in third place in the league table after 17 matches, trailing leaders Kansas City by 12 points.
