Kansas City Secures a Playoff Spot

Published 4 min read

Week 18 of the NWSL delivered everything fans could hope for — drama, history, and plenty of goals. From Kansas City officially booking their ticket to the playoffs, to Utah Royals pulling off a historic upset in Portland, and Gotham snapping their winless streak in style, the league once again proved why it’s one of the most exciting competitions in women’s football. Here’s a full recap of all the action from this thrilling round of matches.

Racing Louisville 1–1 Houston Dash
Louisville controlled the game for a long time, and Taylor Flint’s goal in the 71st minute seemed to guarantee the hosts all three points. However, Houston, fueled by their fantastic form in August, didn’t give up. In stoppage time, Evelina Duljan scored her first NWSL goal, salvaging a draw and extending the Dash’s unbeaten run to five matches.

Orlando Pride 0–2 Gotham FC
At the Orlando stadium, Esther González was in charge. Her 12th goal of the season (league’s top scorer) in the 13th minute gave Gotham the lead after a brilliant play with Rose Lavelle. Before halftime, Jaelin Howell doubled the score, sealing the 2–0 win. It’s a much-needed breakthrough for Gotham after a long winless streak, while the Pride are still searching for the form they had before the summer break.

Seattle Reign 0–0 San Diego Wave
Despite the 0–0 scoreline, there was no shortage of excitement. San Diego dominated possession and repeatedly threatened the opponents’ goal, but excellent saves from Laurel Ivory and a rock-solid Seattle defense meant both teams had to settle for a point.

Portland Thorns 1–2 Utah Royals
A historic night for Utah! Paige Monaghan opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, and late in the game, 16-year-old KK Ream, the youngest goal scorer in NWSL history, doubled the lead. The hosts responded with a goal from Julie Dufour, but an outstanding performance by Mandy McGlynn (with 11 saves) allowed the Royals to celebrate their first away victory of the season.

Washington Spirit 1–1 Chicago Stars
A great atmosphere for Pride Night, over 16,000 fans in the stands, and the return of Trinity Rodman. The hosts took the lead in the 57th minute through Sofia Cantore, but just 10 minutes later, a defensive lapse gave Ludmila the chance to equalize. Spirit remains unbeaten under González, but the draw with the league underdog leaves a sense of missed opportunity.

Angel City FC 2–1 Bay FC
Angel City finally broke the curse and returned to winning ways after eight matches without a victory. Riley Tiernan opened the scoring, but Bay FC equalized through Hill before halftime. The decisive blow came in the 77th minute when Maiara Niehues scored a header to make it 2–1. The visitors tried to respond, but Angel City’s tight defense secured their second straight win.

Kansas City Current 2–0 North Carolina Courage
From the first minutes, it was clear who controlled the game. First, a stunning long-range strike by Izzy Rodriguez, followed by a confidently converted penalty by Lo’eau LaBonta just before halftime. Kansas City Current became the first team to secure a playoff berth and remain unbeaten at home.

Summary of NWSL Week 18
