2. Bundesliga Women (Germany) The new 2. Frauen-Bundesliga season begins at the Ruhrstadion, which is a considerable upgrade on the training-ground setting that still swallows too many good fixtures in the women’s game.
VfL Bochum host promoted Hertha BSC on Sunday afternoon in the division’s showcase fixture, with DFB.TV and LEAGUES carrying the match live. It is an unusually fitting opener: an established second-tier club in its third consecutive season against a newcomer arriving with momentum, supporters and no previous experience at this level.
Bochum vs Hertha is bigger than the first three points
Bochum finished ninth last season with 32 points. That position placed them safely above the bottom two but only two points behind Frankfurt II in eighth and six behind Andernach in sixth. They know the division’s margins.
Hertha know the feeling of winning their league. They do not yet know what happens when every opponent can punish a loose ten-minute spell. Their 4–1 away victory over Saarbrücken in the promotion play-off showed power and composure; the 2–3 home defeat in the return offered a useful warning.
The setting will make it look like Hertha’s promotion party has travelled west. Bochum’s job is to end it.
The relegated clubs start under immediate scrutiny
SGS Essen and Carl Zeiss Jena enter as promotion favourites because both have come down from the Bundesliga. That status starts producing pressure before kick-off. Essen face SC Sand, last season’s third-place side and perhaps the most stable challenger in the field. It is close to the hardest possible opening assignment.
Jena meet SG 99 Andernach, a side that finished sixth and took 38 points last season. Any assumption that relegated teams will simply carry Bundesliga rhythm into the second tier should be tested before Sunday evening.
Three newcomers, three different tests
Hertha have the stage. Hoffenheim II travel to Viktoria Berlin, whose fifth-place finish established them as a credible promotion outsider. Köln II begin with Borussia Mönchengladbach, turning their first second-tier match into a derby.
Reserve teams are unpredictable by nature, but neither Hoffenheim nor Köln were promoted by accident. The opening weekend should tell us how much of their Regionalliga authority survives against older, stronger and more tactically varied opponents.
The remaining fixtures
FC Ingolstadt welcome Turbine Potsdam in a meeting of clubs who finished only eight points apart last season. Meppen begin against Eintracht Frankfurt II, looking to convert last year’s fourth place into an early promotion statement.
By Sunday evening we will know a little more about whether Essen and Jena really are too strong for this level, whether Sand and Meppen have moved closer, and whether Hertha’s arrival is going to be as noisy on the pitch as it has been off it. For an opening weekend, that is plenty.
