Saint-Étienne

AS Saint-Étienne Féminin carries the green-and-white colors of one of France's most storied football clubs into the Première Ligue. Originally founded in 1977 as Racing Club de Saint-Étienne, the women's team operated independently for over three decades before merging with the AS Saint-Étienne men's club following the 2008-09 season. The merger brought the women's programme under the umbrella of the ten-time French men's champions, adding institutional support and resources to an already established women's team. Based in the industrial city of Saint-Étienne in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, the club plays its home matches at the Stade Salif-Keita, a 1,000-capacity venue named after the legendary Malian footballer who starred for Les Verts in the 1970s. The intimate ground provides a passionate atmosphere for Première Ligue matches, with the club benefiting from Saint-Étienne's deep footballing culture and loyal fanbase. The 2025-26 season has been a battle for survival in the top division, with Saint-Étienne competing in the lower reaches of the Première Ligue table. The club's long history in French women's football — spanning nearly five decades — and the backing of the AS Saint-Étienne name provide a foundation for continued development, even as the increasingly competitive and professionalized league presents ongoing challenges for clubs outside the financial elite.
