NWSL Klara Kössler scored twice as Denver Summit beat Chicago Stars 6-1, with Natasha Flint and Kössler scoring two minutes apart after Chicago had pulled a goal back. Five Denver players shared the six goals; Kössler was the only one to score more than once.
Janine Sonis, Yuzuki Yamamoto and Olivia Thomas also scored for the home side. Julia Grosso supplied Chicago’s reply in the 53rd minute, but the score had moved from 3-1 to 5-1 by the 58th.
Flint and Kössler answer Grosso’s goal
The short sequence after Grosso scored accounted for two of Denver’s four second-half goals. Flint made it 4-1 in the 56th minute, restoring the three-goal difference that had existed before Chicago’s goal. Kössler followed in the 58th for her second of the match.
Kössler’s first had come in the 19th minute, six minutes after Sonis opened the scoring. Those two goals gave Denver a 2-0 lead before the interval, with Yamamoto adding the third in the 47th minute.
Grosso scored six minutes after Yamamoto. Chicago’s first goal reduced the gap to two, but that score lasted only three minutes before Flint added Denver’s fourth. The fifth arrived two minutes later.
Thomas completed the scoring in the 85th minute. Her goal made her Denver’s fifth different scorer, joining Sonis, Kössler, Yamamoto and Flint. The home side scored twice before the break and four times after it; Chicago’s only goal came between Denver’s third and fourth.
Denver put seven of 18 shots on target
Denver recorded 18 shots to Chicago’s six, and seven shots on target to the visitors’ one. The hosts scored six goals from those seven shots on target. Chicago scored once, with Grosso providing both their sole goal and their only scorer.
Sixteen of Denver’s shots came from inside the penalty area, compared with four of Chicago’s six. The hosts also recorded 62% possession and 490 passes, completing 436. Chicago completed 238 of 309 passes.
The corner count was closer, at three for Denver and two for Chicago. Denver committed eight fouls and Chicago three. Leila Ouahabi received the match’s only yellow card in the 41st minute, when the Stars were two goals behind.
Chicago had scored to make it 3-1 before the hour, but Denver’s next two goals left the visitors facing a four-goal gap with more than half an hour remaining. Thomas’s late goal extended that margin to five.
