Women’s football fans in Mexico are about to witness a truly special event. The players of FC Barcelona, reigning Spanish champions and three-time UEFA Women’s Champions League winners, will travel to Monterrey to play the inaugural “Duelo de Estrellas” against the top stars of the Liga MX Femenil.
The match will take place on August 22 at Estadio Universitario in the state of Nuevo León. The All-Star team will feature representatives from all 18 clubs currently competing in the Mexican league.
According to league officials, this event carries tremendous significance for the growth and promotion of women’s football in Mexico.
“The ‘Duelo de Estrellas’ is another step in strengthening the position of our league. We want to honor the talent of our players and showcase their impact not only on the field but also off it. For fans, this is a chance to feel an even stronger connection with our league and its heroines,” the league emphasized in an official statement.
The All-Star roster was selected based on players’ performances during the ongoing season and a special Index Score ranking. In addition, three players were chosen by fan voting, and two others will join the squad as surprise picks. Among the selected stars is Charlyn Corral, the league’s all-time leading scorer.
After the Monterrey match, Barcelona will head to Mexico City, where on August 24 they will face last season’s runners-up, Club América. The friendly tour is part of Barcelona’s preparation for the new Spanish league season, which kicks off on August 31 against Alhama CF.
