Ekstraliga Women Legia Ladies and Ślęza Wrocław make their ORLEN Ekstraliga debuts this weekend. Neither has been given much time to look around. Legia start against last season’s runners-up; Ślęza face one of the established sides they will hope to catch.
Legia Ladies vs Pogoń Szczecin
This will attract the largest share of outside attention. Legia make their Ekstraliga debut at home against last season’s runners-up, a club with no intention of becoming a prop in somebody else’s historic afternoon.
Pogoń finished five points behind Czarni Sosnowiec and begin the new campaign with a clear title ambition. They should have more top-flight experience, greater familiarity with the speed of the league and the calmer preparation. Legia will have energy, a crowd and the emotional force that often makes promoted teams most dangerous before the table teaches them caution.
For Legia, a competitive performance would support the idea that survival is only the first target. For Pogoń, anything less than three points creates an opening-day question they do not want.
Ślęza Wrocław vs Lech Poznań UAM
Ślęza receive a more representative first test. Lech finished eighth last season on 26 points, level with Śląsk Wrocław and only three above AP Orlen Gdańsk. These are the matches a promoted club must learn to contest if it intends to stay.
Lech will see the same fixture from the opposite direction. Established mid-table teams cannot afford to donate early confidence to a newcomer, particularly in a division where six clubs were separated by six points through the middle and lower-middle positions.
The champions start against SMS
Czarni Sosnowiec host Grot SMS Łódź. The champions begin as favourites, but SMS finished fifth last season and were the best side outside the leading quartet. A result in Sosnowiec would immediately suggest the gap between those groups can close.
Czarni’s title defence will be judged on precisely these fixtures. Their rivals can match them in head-to-head games; the champions separated themselves by dropping fewer unnecessary points.
Katowice, Łęczna and the first chance to keep pace
GKS Katowice face Rekord Bielsko-Biała, while Górnik Łęczna host AP Orlen Gdańsk. Both contenders should win. Both opponents are good enough to make “should” an uncomfortable word.
Katowice finished third, one point above Łęczna. Neither can assume Czarni and Pogoń will wait while they find rhythm. A title race with four credible teams makes every home opener feel slightly larger.
AZS UJ Kraków vs Śląsk Wrocław
The weekend’s quietest fixture may be one of its most informative. AZS UJ ended last season ninth on 24 points; Śląsk finished seventh with 26. Two points and two places separated them. Both now share the division with ambitious promoted clubs.
A win would create breathing room before the table develops pressure. A defeat would not be a crisis, but it would revive every question from last spring before August has properly begun.
The first weekend will not settle anything, but it is unusually well designed to puncture pre-season optimism. One of the newcomers may discover the step up immediately. One of the title contenders may spend Sunday chasing points it expected to have. After a long summer, that uncertainty is the attraction.
