Matchweek 11 of the ORLEN Women’s Ekstraliga, the final round before the winter break, delivered exactly what could be expected from a tension-filled autumn: battles for every inch of the pitch, standout performances from league leaders, and drama among the teams at the bottom of the table. Previews often referred to this as “the fight for peace of mind before winter” and indeed, for many teams those last 90 minutes of autumn could shape their mood for the coming months. Czarni Sosnowiec defended their lead, Pogoń Szczecin put on a performance worthy of a title contender, Górnik Łęczna regained stability, and GKS Katowice made it very clear they may shake things up in spring more than anyone expected.
MATCHES OF ROUND 11
Akademia Piłkarska LG – GKS Katowice 2:5
Katowice were described in previews as a “silent contender for the podium,” and they proved it with a statement win in Gdańsk. Only two minutes in, Nicola Brzęczek opened the scoring after a moment of hesitation from the hosts’ defence. AP LG responded with two goals from Fabová, but from that point onward the pace and quality belonged entirely to GKS.
Brzęczek added two more goals to complete an impressive hat-trick, while Patricía Hmírová scored from the penalty spot and Julia Langosz struck in injury time. Gdańsk fought hard, but the difference in efficiency was clear, Katowice head into winter sending a strong message: they’re far from done.
UKS SMS Łódź – Czarni Sosnowiec 2:3
A top-of-the-table clash that lived up to expectations. UKS SMS, badly needing points, started strongly, a 7th-minute goal from Paulina Filipczak sparked hope for an upset.
But the leaders from Sosnowiec once again proved that maturity and patience are their greatest strengths. After the break they began a steady march toward victory: K. Mikstone equalised, and Patrycja Sarapata scored twice, earning player of the match honours.
Łódź pulled one back late on but couldn’t salvage a point. Czarni end the autumn as a team that doesn’t crack under pressure.
Śląsk Wrocław – Pogoń Szczecin 0:5
This was expected to be an evenly matched contest, instead, we witnessed a display of attacking brilliance from Pogoń. Coming off a win over Górnik Łęczna, Szczecin delivered one of their best performances of the season.
Five goals, five different scorers, and total domination: Poluhovica opened the scoring, followed by goals from Świrska, Giętkowska, Yosue, and Radochońska.
Śląsk, fighting to stay in the upper half of the table, were helpless against the tempo and intensity imposed by the visitors.
Rekord Bielsko-Biała – Lech Poznań UAM 0:0
Both sides anticipated a goal-filled match, especially after Rekord’s wild 4:4 draw last week and Lech’s long-awaited breakthrough. Instead, we got a surprisingly cautious contest.
Both teams prioritised organisation and defensive safety. While the lack of goals may disappoint, the draw feels fair, neither Rekord nor Lech wanted to take big risks before the winter break.
Górnik Łęczna – Pogoń Tczew 3:1
Górnik entered the match aiming to rebuild morale after losing to Pogoń Szczecin and although they won, it wasn’t easy. Pogoń Tczew, despite being the underdog, fought bravely and equalised minutes after Klaudia Lefeld’s opener.
Górnik had to be patient and it finally paid off in stoppage time. Ratajczyk scored first, followed moments later by Ostrowska, sealing the three points.
Łęczna end the year still in the title race, though their performance showed there’s work to be done.
Stomilanki Olsztyn – UJ Kraków 1:1
An evening match, and a classic “six-pointer.” Stomilanki, having finally broken their losing streak, took the lead through Arthur and held it for most of the game.
But UJ are known for fighting until the end and in the 83rd minute Wiktoria Kaczmarek equalised. Both teams left the pitch feeling they could have earned more.
The match showcased both determination and lingering issues: Stomilanki’s finishing and UJ’s defensive instability remain areas to improve in spring.
RESCHEDULED MATCHES
Just after the round ended, two crucial postponed matches await and they may significantly reshape the standings:
19 November – GKS Katowice vs Pogoń Tczew
A match that, on paper, Katowice should win, but its importance for the table is huge. A victory would bring GKS within one match of the league’s top teams.
22 November – Lech Poznań UAM vs GKS Katowice
This one has real stakes. If Katowice take all six points from their postponed games, they will finish the year as one of the league’s top three teams, despite being outside the top five only weeks ago.
For Lech UAM, it’s a chance to strengthen their mid-table position and confirm their progress.
AUTUMN FINALE SUMMARY
Matchweek 11 reinforced the current hierarchy, but also delivered strong signs that spring will be exceptionally exciting:
- Czarni Sosnowiec confirmed their championship mentality.
- Pogoń Szczecin look like a team ready to fight for the title until the very end.
- Górnik Łęczna remain in the race, though they need to stabilise their form.
- GKS Katowice could become the biggest winner of the winter thanks to their rescheduled matches.
- The bottom-table teams, Stomilanki, UJ, and Pogoń Tczew, are still searching for solutions to avoid a nerve-wracking spring.
Autumn has ended, but the excitement surely hasn’t. When the league returns after the winter break, the margin for error will be minimal and the stakes even higher.
