Women’s Champions League – Matchday 2: PSG vs Real Madrid. Parisian pressing versus Madrid elegance

Published 3 min read

An exciting evening awaits in Paris. At the Parc des Princes, two teams that have long dreamed of breaking Barcelona’s dominance, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, will face off. Both clubs began this year’s Women’s Champions League campaign with hopes of marching all the way to the final, but Matchday 2 will already provide a serious test of their character.

PSG – a new chapter after a painful start

Paris Saint-Germain’s European campaign did not start as planned. A 0–4 loss to Wolfsburg in the opening round was a cold shower for a team that had ambitions to return to the continental elite. Nevertheless, PSG have been solid in the French league, wins over Dijon (1–0), Nantes (5–2), and Lens (3–0) show that the team is slowly finding its rhythm, even if the heavy 1–6 defeat to Lyon still stings.

In attack, the main threat remains Merveille Kanjinga (2 goals, 1 assist), whose pace and strength in duels make her a constant danger. Romee Leuchter (2 goals, 1 assist) has also been effective, while experienced Rasheedat Ajibade adds aggression and energy in pressing and off-ball work.

However, PSG’s main weakness remains defensive stability. In their last four games, the team has conceded an average of more than two goals per match, and facing an attack-minded Real Madrid side, that could prove decisive.

Real Madrid – an attack gathering momentum

The situation looks very different for Real Madrid. The “Merengues” have started the season with confidence, dominating the Spanish league with wins over Athletic Bilbao (4–1), Badalona (3–0), and Deportivo La Coruña (4–0). In the Champions League, they also impressed, crushing AS Roma 6–2.

Real’s strength lies in their versatile attack. Athenea del Castillo (2 goals, 2 assists) and Alba Redondo (1 goal, 1 assist) drive the team’s wing play, while young Linda Caicedo (1 goal, 1 assist) continues to dazzle with her pace and creativity. Eva Navarro, though not prolific in front of goal, is key in building play, her 5 assists so far speak volumes.

In midfield, experience reigns supreme. Caroline Weir (4 goals in 6 matches) and Sara Däbritz (3 goals) provide balance between technique and pressing, while Naomie Feller adds tempo in transition.

Head-to-head: Real looking for a breakthrough

Past meetings between PSG and Real Madrid have favored the French side. In 2022, PSG won 2–1 at home, while the return leg in Madrid ended 0–0. The record therefore stands at one win and one draw for PSG, but both encounters showed that the gap between the teams has been closing steadily.

This time, Real travel to Paris more experienced, mature, and clinical than two years ago. PSG, despite their early struggles, hope that home support will carry them to their first win of this season’s Champions League campaign.

Clash of styles

The match promises to be a battle of contrasting philosophies. PSG rely on physicality, high pressing, and quick transitions, while Real Madrid favor a combination-based game with plenty of passing and fluid offensive rotations.

The midfield battle may prove decisive, Weir and Däbritz on one side versus Kanjinga and Ajibade on the other could dictate the tempo. If PSG manage to impose their pressing and harness the crowd’s energy, the match could turn into a physical showdown. But if Real dominate possession, the Parisians may find themselves chasing the ball and as seen against Barcelona and Wolfsburg, that rarely ends well.
