Goal chronology and match flow – no chance to be bored!
Spain dictated the terms from the very start. In the 20th minute Alexia Putellas put her team ahead with a fine finish from a precise Vicky López pass. Belgium, however, had no intention of giving up. Just a few minutes later Justine Vanhaevermaet made perfect use of a corner to level at 1-1, sending a clear signal that the Red Flames would not surrender the three points easily.
Before the break Spain regained the lead thanks to a powerful header from captain Irene Paredes after a free-kick. Montse Tomé’s players came out for the second half with even greater determination. Esther González and Mariona Caldentey quickly stretched the scoreline, and Claudia Pina added her name with a precision strike from outside the box. Belgium could respond only once, via Hannah Eurlings, but the last word belonged to Putellas, who sealed the 6-2 result with her second goal near the end.
Tactical analysis – dominance executed with elegance
Spain displayed the combinational football typical of their best sides: ball control, quick passing exchanges, constant movement, dynamic wing incursions and a balanced link-up between the lines. Their high-energy pressing forced Belgian errors in build-up, creating a host of chances. The opponents’ high defensive line was dissected by clever inter-passing and frequent positional switches.
Belgium tried to exploit counter-attacks and set pieces, but they lacked both composure and a stronger safety net when they lost possession. Their attacks became predictable and posed little defensive challenge to Spain.
Key figures – Alexia Putellas tops the stars
The clear stand-out was Alexia Putellas. Not only did she score twice, she also provided two assists and created countless opportunities for team-mates. Her finesse and game reading were breathtaking. Vicky López and captain Irene Paredes also shone, the latter netting the crucial 2-1 header. Mariona Caldentey, Claudia Pina and Aitana Bonmatí completed the picture of a side that earned their big win at every turn.
Post-match quotes – Spain’s joy, Belgium’s pride
After the match Spain’s leader, Alexia Putellas, underlined the historic nature of their dominance:
“Eighty per cent possession is an impressive feat that shows we play with passion and character. We’re delighted with this victory, but we stay focused. Every match is a new challenge.”
Belgium coach Elísabet Gunnarsdóttir, despite the defeat, praised her players’ fighting spirit:
“The girls fought to the end and gave everything. Lessons like this are valuable for us. I believe in this team, even though today’s result hurts.”
Montserrat Tomé, Spain’s head coach, proudly highlighted her side’s quality:
“We did our job brilliantly. The team played great tactically, but we won’t get complacent. We’re already preparing for the next challenges.”
Tournament outlook – is the road to the final wide open?
With their impressive display, Spain have practically sealed a quarter-final place from Group B and confirmed their status as one of Euro 2025’s most dangerous teams. After two matches and an aggregate score of 11-2 (having previously thrashed Portugal 5-0), it is hard not to see them as prime candidates for the title.
Belgium, although still mathematically alive, are virtually out of the tournament after two defeats. The side lacks clear reinforcement at the back and efficiency up front. Looking ahead, Belgium must improve defensive organisation, add creativity in attack and learn from their matches if they want to compete again with the elite.
Spain delivered a true masterclass in effectiveness and footballing class today – and Belgium proved that even in defeat you can show grit and character. UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 continues, and there is certainly no shortage of excitement to come!
